All Saints Scripture:
Revelation 7:9-17
Psalm 34:1-10, 22
1 John 3:1-3
Matthew 5:1-12
Notes from Fr. Cathie Caimano’s sermon :
7 major Feasts of the church, 4 of them are about God’s actions directly:
Christmas, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost
Three are about our reaction to God’s actions:
Epiphany, Trinity Sunday, and All Saints Day
The door from this life to life everlasting is narrow. Of course its narrow. It excludes every last one of your good works. But the door from this life to the life to come - it isn’t just narrow.I t’s thin. We’re just too thick to recognize it most of the time.
Today we celebrate our call as mystics
‘The one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord’
Mystic - someone who has direct experience with God. It’s not intellectual and it stretches ordinary human logic.
To be a Christian is to be, on some level, a mystic. Because we really do believe that Jesus rose from the dead. And we really do believe we will all see resurrection.
Social media this week - someone pushing me. ‘Christians feel like they can just break the laws of science and logic. It’s ridiculous!
It certainly seems so. Christians have been ridiculed for centuries for our beliefs. But one thing the commenter got wrong - we don’t just willy-nilly decide that reality doesn’t apply to us. Resurrection is GOD’s action (and God created the laws of physics and logic to begin with!). Believing it is real is faith.
The Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
We tend to make this into we have to care for the poor (not that this is a bad idea…)
Not a command - a promise!
What Jesus is saying is: THIS IS NOT YOUR REAL LIFE.
Jesus is opening the mystical door to his followers: live as if heaven is real, because it is.
Revelation: We stay away from it, from all its scary visions.. But we shouldn’t
It’s a beautiful, mystical vision of the end times. When all is reconciled to God - all those robed in white - and ‘every tear is wiped from every eye’
Blessing and glory and wisdom an honor to God for ever and ever. Amen! Amen!
So full of ecstatic joy that they are in constant worship of God. When we gather here for worship, we are just on the other side of that holy realm. We are worshiping together!
Even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
How do we know? We know
Arland Wallace. My friend, who died earlier this year.
We talked just before he died, and he said he was looking forward to seeing what heaven was like.
‘Arland, give me a sign’. ‘If I can, I will.’
He did!
